किसी संज्ञा के बारे में सामान्य जानकारी बताते समय, उस संज्ञा में निहित गुण का सिर्फ अस्तित्व प्रदर्शित करते समय विशेषण के positive रूप का प्रयोग किया जाता है. उदा. This is a useful book.

Useful यह विशेषण positive degree का रूप है.

Degrees Of Comparison-

परिभाषा:-किसी व्यक्ति या वस्तु में कोई गुण कितनी मात्रा में है इसकी तुलना को ही degrees of comparison कहते हैं।

Definition-The degree of comparison is the comparison of the quantity of a property in a person or thing.

Degrees of Comparison

Positive Degree (पॉजिटिव डिग्री)
Comparative Degree (कम्पेरेटिव डिग्री)
Superlative Degree (सुपरलेटिव डिग्री)

विशेषण का उपयोग तुलना करने के लिये करते समय विशेषण के comparative रूप का प्रयोग किया जाता है. You have become taller than your father. इस वाक्य में taller विशेषण का comparative रूप है.

कोई चीज़ अथवा कोई गुण सर्वोच्च स्तर का है यह दर्शाने के लिये विशेषण के superlative रूप का प्रयोग किया जाता है. उदा. This is the best book I have read. इस वाक्य में best विशेषण का superlative रूप है.

Rule to change from Positive to Comparative and Superlative

एक Syllable के Adjective में r/er जोड़कर Comparative Degree तथा st/est जोड़कर Superlative Degree में बदला जाता है।
जब एडजेक्टिव के अंत में एक Consonant हो और उसके पहले vowel हो, तो अंत में प्रयुक्त consonant को double करने के बाद er जोड़कर Comparative तथा est जोड़कर Superlative Degree में बदला जाता है।
अगर Positive Degree के Adjective के अंत में Consonant +y हो तो y को i में बदलने के बाद er जोड़ कर Comparative और est जोड़ कर Superlative बनाया जाता है। (Note- यदि y के पहले कोई vowel हो, तो y को i में नहीं बदला जाता है। )

जिस Adverb के अंत में ly हो, तो उस से पहले more लगाकर Comparative और most लगाकर Superlative बना सकते है
दो या दो से अधिक syllables के Adjective से पहले more लगाकर Comparative और most लगाकर Superlative बना सकते है।
